Hello, beautiful souls,
I used to be terrified of using my voice. Sounds strange coming from a singer, right? But during grad school, my performance anxiety was through the roof. The deeper I got into my classical training—the perfectionism, the microscopic focus on every little sound—the worse my nerves became. My voice would shake, constrict, and feel completely out of my control. It was miserable.
At the time, I was also taking yoga classes. At the end of each session, the instructor would have us chant Om. And every single time, I’d feel a wave of panic rise up inside me. Me—a singer!—completely frozen at the thought of making a simple, sustained sound.
But here’s the thing: chanting Om is supposed to feel good. It’s meant to calm the nervous system, not send it into fight-or-flight mode. Years later, after deep vocal exploration and somatic work, I finally got there. Now, the moment I begin chanting, my entire body shifts into a blissful, altered state of deep peace and healing. It feels mystical. No matter where I am or what’s happening around me, my voice brings me home.
And I want this for you, too. Because your voice is meant to soothe you, to feel amazing in your body. It’s not about sounding perfect—it’s about feeling free.
Try this simple practice:
✨Find a comfortable seat, take a deep breath, and let out an Om.
✨Instead of focusing on how you sound, shift your attention to how the sound feels in your body.
✨Notice the vibrations—where do they resonate? Your chest? Your belly? Maybe even your pelvis?
✨Let your voice be your internal massage, releasing tension and bathing you in calming, feel-good chemicals like oxytocin and melatonin.
✨Repeat for a few minutes, and let yourself sink into the experience.
This isn’t just a vocal exercise—it’s medicine for your nervous system. And the more you do it, the more your voice will become a source of peace and power in your life.
Comment and let me know what you notice!
Keep singing, wild souls, for yourself and for the whole.
