Have you heard of the butterfly effect?
It’s the concept that small causes can have large effects. Its name is derived from the metaphorical example in chaos theory that a hurricane (time of formation, path followed, etc) can be influenced by something as minor as a distant butterfly flapping its wings several weeks earlier.
Well, I’m coining the term “voice effect.” It’s the idea that just like a butterfly flapping its wings can influence a hurricane, just one embodied voice can change the course of the world.
A famous singer, musician, band, or public figure standing in their truth and uniqueness can influence countless others, giving them inspiration or permission to be themselves, and influencing an entire generation of music, politics, living, and all that comes after.
Examples? It’s so easy to just tick them off…
Singers/Musicians/Bands:
The Beatles
Michael Jackson
Elvis Presley
Queen (Freddie Mercury)
Madonna
Bob Marley
Bob Dylan
Bob Seeger
Carole King
Political Figures:
Malala Yousafzai
Rosa Parks
John F. Kennedy
Martin Luther King Jr
Abraham Lincoln
Mahatma Ghandi
Barack Obama
Nelson Mandela
These are examples of famous people. But we don’t have to be famous to have a profound effect on the world we live in. One smile can spark an endless stream of smiles passed from person to person, with no telling where or if they ever end.
One person standing in their uniqueness and truth is a force to be reckoned with. It is worth the journey and inner searching to find out what that means for you, to have your voice rooted deeply in your body and soul, and emanating utterly from your loving truth. Just through the process of asking these questions and endeavoring to live consistently in your deepest truth, you will have a profoundly positive impact on the world. Just like the tiny flapping of a butterfly’s ephemeral wings, there is no telling what kind of positive impact it will be. Only that the reach of your voice will be vast and far for ages to come.
